Music Video: “Deja Vu”

by

There were 6431 signatures on the petition to have Beyonce re-shoot her latest video for the song “Deja Vu” when I looked at it this evening. Yes, I said petition. I generally try to avoid music videos, but I had to see what all the fuss is about:

The petition calls Beyonce’s dancing confusing, her interactions with Jay-Z alarming, and her wardrobe unbelievable and ridiculous.

As far as the Jay-Z cameo, I agree. I hate how Beyonce seems to be reduced to video ho status while Jigga raps about that fact that he fucks her. It’s disgusting and beneath her. But her hanging all over him in a video isn’t a new thing.

When it comes to the dancing, however, I think “Deja Vu” is one of Beyonce’s best to date and I applaud the singer-songwriter for making a few unpredictable choices. She showed that she’s an artist and not just a performer.

Finally, I love the haute couture in the video. Sure, there were a few missteps (see gigantic white platform sandals), but overall it’s far more interesting than seeing the singer writhe around in another skimpy outfit… well, more interesting for me at least.

When you’ve got people starting petitions you know you’re doing something right. Brava!

I kinda like the gear in this video. But I dunno… she just doesn’t “wow” me.

There’s just something about both Beyonce and Jay-Z that has always irked me. Oh, and I heard that PETA is having it out with her over her wearing fur so that ties in with your other blog.

Anyways, I kind of agree with the petitioners on the dances and skankish interaction with Jigga, but the wardrobe was the least annoying to me …though I don’t feel the red outfits fit well with the green forest setting.

the thing about Jay-Z and Beyonce that is irksome:

for me anyhow, is that they are pretty much the king and queen of hip pop (popular hip hop) culture. i.e. men who “don’t care” and brag about their excessive wealth and sexual exploits; and women whose sexual attractiveness is more important than any of their other qualities.

the two of them are both talented and intelligent but have built their success on less substantial sides of their gifts: J’s admittedly dumbed down lyrics; B’s fit into the beauty mold.

    And so it is…

I wasn’t so much offended by the video as much as I was bored. We’ve seen her do her “booty clap” for the last couple of years. Haven’t we seen this a million times in other hip hop and pop videos? It’s time for her and her contemporaries to evolve. Down with the video ho!
