“Rockstar” Fashion

by

The quotes are for two reasons: 1)I’m referring to the front(wo)man competition being aired on the CBS network, called “Rockstar, Supernova” and 2) I hesitate to dub the contestants of the pretentious talent show rockstars.

Don’t get me wrong. They’re all talented; and some of them may even be authentic rockers. But seriously, the show is not but American Idol with more tattoos and edgier stylists.

The judges continue to tell Dana that she needs to be edgier. My question: why did they pick her in the first place? The girl can sing, there’s no doubt about it. But a rocker she is NOT.

Week to week they try different looks on her, but clothes can only do so much. Put this chick on the first plane to Hollywood or Nashville – where they’ll starve her skinny, bleach her blond, and choreograph a two-step or something for her.

Lukas isn’t one of the better singers, but he just might be one of the better rockers, if for no other reason than his undeniable rock swagger.

Stylists or not, he does a convincing job in his skunk ‘do and eyeshadow (which I actually think is pretty cool).

The mark of a real rocker is that she or he is completely unapologetic about being herself or himself. Of course, all artists are inspired or influenced by others, but no true rockstar would flat out copy another’s style. Josh committed a huge faux pas by sporting Cobain-esque flannel and (fake) worn-in jeans. The costume only drew attention to the fact that the would-be boybander’s rendition of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” was just plain weak.

Jill makes the same mistake by imitating the late-great’s widow, Courtney Love in her performance of Hole’s “Violet”.

Now, Dilana is the real deal. The woman can sing and she’s fire on stage – even without doing on the unnecessary jumping and thrashing. Unfortunately, she’s not terribly chic.

On the other hand, Zayra can barely sing a note, but she looked stunning in this long, shimmering gown, which was a refreshing sight after all the black the show’s stylists seem to love so much. Still, given the nature of the competition, Dilana wins it. Easily.
