Style Icon Spotting: Janelle Monae

February 7, 2009
By Eighty Jane

While I did take a break from blogging, I continued by occasional Priestess-skulking about town and photo’ing pretty, or in some other way interesting, things I spotted.

Janelle Monae at Big Ballet On one of these occasions I found myself at opening night of “Big” at the Fox Theater in Atlanta last Spring. Janelle Monae “Big” was an electrifying moment in what was an otherwise sloppy. Was it that “artsy” version of sloppy, or just poor execution? Not sure. Still tons of Kudos to Antwan “Big Boi” Patton and Atlanta Ballet for the daring move.

Though Janelle Monae’s star hasn’t quite caught fire on the popular stage, she’s clearly one to watch. Her style has evolved from cluttered neo-soul blah to a distinctive and sharp trademark look. And in a rare combination, the Cult love’s both her style AND her music.
