In honor of tonight’s finale of Project Runway season 8, we feature Season 6 alum Althea Harper‘s latest collection for Spring-Summer 2011. Harper, who narrowly lost the win to designer Irina Shabeyeva, showed a much matured and polished version of her reality TV self at a presentation during New York Fashion Week in September.

The designer is a great example of the fact that, despite the myth, TV appearances can only support (not create) a successful designer & entrepreneur. In some cases being on TV can even derail an otherwise inspired person. Accordingly, dedication and focus are the true magic ingredients.

The show went sour for me a few seasons ago (with some particularly obnoxious and clearly producer-influenced judging decisions). And despite its fashtastic content shows like it and The Rachel Zoe Project have become increasing less worthy of my time and attention.

Nonetheless, the Project Runway final collections are still on the Cult radar because they show during New York Fashion Week. Having not been influenced by their previous competition performance or their on-air personalities, I’ve selected my favorites from the ten designers who showed at a very lengthy presentation last week at the Lincoln Center. One of my picks is Ivy Higa, whose collection has an easy luxe appeal and seems the most plugged into the current market. I first thought Ivy would be my favorite to win, but the more I look at Mondo Guerra the more I love it. His collection showed a playful yet sophisticated take on pattern mixing and color that’s sort of Anna Sui meets Luella, with just a splash of Marni in for good measure.

Heidi Klum picked the perfect time to wear her original Emilio Sosa dress last night at the premiere of “The Backup Plan.” The Project Runway 7 Finale is tonight! I think the judges did well to pick Mila to go forward to the finals. All three finalistw this year have beautiful construction and great design. Watch what past contestanst have to say about who should win, then enjoy a sneak peak at the collections at Bryant Park.

Winning a reality TV contest is definitely no guarantee for real-life success, but a few smart winners have turned their 15-minutes into genuine, respectable careers. Project Runway Season 6 winner Irina Shabayeva hasn’t quite proven that she’ll be around for the long haul, but she showed that she can produce a collection as well as some of the industry vets – even better in some cases. She showed a slew of feathered and furred neutrals at NYFW over the weekend. See Shabayeva’s first “real world” collection in the gallery below, followed by an interview with the designer just after her win.
