Althea Harper SS11 – NYFW

In honor of tonight’s finale of Project Runway season 8, we feature Season 6 alum Althea Harper‘s latest collection for Spring-Summer 2011. Harper, who narrowly lost the win to designer Irina Shabeyeva, showed a much matured and polished version of her reality TV self at a presentation during New York Fashion Week in September.

The designer is a great example of the fact that, despite the myth, TV appearances can only support (not create) a successful designer & entrepreneur. In some cases being on TV can even derail an otherwise inspired person. Accordingly, dedication and focus are the true magic ingredients.

Suno at Matches Next Spring?

Max Osterweis started Suno in 2008 after years of visiting Kenya and collecting textiles from the east African country. He later teamed with Erin Beatty to design collections in New York City and employ Kenyan artisans to produce the clothing, which is as of Fall 2010 was exclusively available in the U.S. The A/W 2010 collection included a great selection of dresses and jackets, but an online search of where to buy the brand produced just a smattering of items at Barney’s, Otte NY, and Opening Ceremony.

The label’s showing at New York Fashion Week this past Saturday, however, may have completely changed the scope of availability for the burgeoning company. According to an off-the-cuff tweet by Matches Fashion Director Bridget Cosgrove, the London-based fashion guidepost will stock pieces from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Cosgrove praised the “fabulous ethnic print combo’s with sophisticated twist colours” and womenswear buyer Georgina Gainza echoed the applause, calling the line “the new Dries.” If she means Dries van Noten, as I assume, that’s a pretty mighty compliment.

It will be interesting to see what ends up on the shelves (or the e-shelves for those of us with an ocean or so between us and London). See some of my favorites from the collection above and below.

Project Runway Designers at New York Fashion Week

First, allow me to admit that I haven’t watched a single second of this season’s Project Runway. The show went sour for me a few seasons ago (with some particularly obnoxious and clearly producer-influenced judging decisions). And despite its fashtastic content shows like it and The Rachel Zoe Project have become increasing less worthy of my time and attention.

Nonetheless, the Project Runway final collections are still on the Cult radar because they show during New York Fashion Week. Having not been influenced by their previous competition performance or their on-air personalities, I’ve selected my favorites from the ten designers who showed at a very lengthy presentation last week at the Lincoln Center. One of my picks is Ivy Higa, whose collection has an easy luxe appeal and seems the most plugged into the current market. I first thought Ivy would be my favorite to win, but the more I look at Mondo Guerra the more I love it. His collection showed a playful yet sophisticated take on pattern mixing and color that’s sort of Anna Sui meets Luella, with just a splash of Marni in for good measure.

Project Runway 7 Finale Collections + Heidi Klum Wearing Emilio Sosa

Heidi Klum picked the perfect time to wear her original Emilio Sosa dress last night at the premiere of “The Backup Plan.” The Project Runway 7 Finale is tonight! I think the judges did well to pick Mila to go forward to the finals. All three finalistw this year have beautiful construction and great design. Watch what past contestanst have to say about who should win, then enjoy a sneak peak at the collections at Bryant Park.

Project Runway Irina Shabayeva’s First Real World Collection

Winning a reality TV contest is definitely no guarantee for real-life success, but a few smart winners have turned their 15-minutes into genuine, respectable careers. Project Runway Season 6 winner Irina Shabayeva hasn’t quite proven that she’ll be around for the long haul, but she showed that she can produce a collection as well as some of the industry vets – even better in some cases. She showed a slew of feathered and furred neutrals at NYFW over the weekend. Project Runway Season 6 Finale: Irina Wins!

Georgian-American designer Irina Shabayeva took home the prize in Project Runway’s first season in L.A. and on the Lifetime network. Irina, despite her the lack of hue variation in her collection, presented the best collection by far.

Second place designer Althea Harper had a collection that would give buyers many options, but she and Carol Hannah still looked like amateurs reaching a bit for the high standards of Bryant Park. Irina on the other hand looked like she definitely belonged there.

Tracy Reese NYFW Spring 2010

An edgy departure for Tracy Reese, whose clothing tends toward ultra girly. This season we saw boxier shapes to appeal to the tomboy in us all. The collection also used color in a new way, relying on bold color combinations and solids to enhance Reese’ trademark patterns.

WRKROOM – NYFW Spring 2010

‘Tis the season Cult members! Even if you aren’t travelling to fashion weeks this year, keeping up with all the new goodies is quite a task. Especially so when “the man” owns your soul from 9 to 5 daily. So please forgive my tardy coverage of NYFW Spring 2010. I had the pleasure of having my fashion week cherry popped this year and it has been a whirlwind, to say the very least!

While I wasn’t rubbing shoulders with Ms. Wintour in the tents, I did manage to snag an invite or two to a few lesser known, but no less fantastic presentations and shows. One if these was the debut of WRKROOM by fashion insiders Je Jung and Rujira Lawonvisut.

Jung and Lawonvisut have careers that include stops at Theory, Urban Outfitters, and Gap. The pair now venture into their own brand, offering up exquisite basics influenced by their international and diverse backgrounds. See the wares that were up for grabs during the inaugural Fashion’s Night Out below.

Haute Halloween: Rodarte Spring 2010

So what will you dress up as for Halloween? A witch (scary)? A goblin (scarier)? A model from Rodarte’s Spring 2010 runway (scariest!)?

I kid, of course. Designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy are all the rage for good reason. Their creations are as original as Giselle’s legs are long. They aren’t simply churning out their own versions of whatever trend is hot at the moment. Still, I can’t help but feel like their rich-rag style would be hard to wear for a size 8 fatty like me (more jest). Am I wrong? Well, send me some Rodarte and prove me wrong! Ehem…

At any rate, I doubt I’ll be wearing Rodarte for Halloween, but I should start planning now. I so want to be as fest-day chic as my blog buddy Bombchell – otherwise known as Atlanta’s Sexiest Geek. Here she is as a Fafinette last year. Adorable, no?
