Considering the media frenzy that is NYC’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, it’s easy to forget that the other US coast hosts a considerable week of fashion each season as well. Los Angeles fashion week is like the quiet, underdeveloped step-sister that many fashionophiles seem to forget about. The collections you see there tend to be more pedestrian than avant garde, but that, frankly, is what keeps real fashion going.

The Twitter powered Web site will aggregate all real time reactions to the shows, parties and people of New York Fashion Week with useful and user-friendly functionality. It will be live September 8-20, 2009.

The site will include sections where users can view Tweets from front row attendees, fashion bloggers, magazines, labels and models; a section on the site for all Fashion Week photos; a feed that aggregates all relevant Fashion Week Tweets from the Twitter population; and search capabilities of Twitter content by label or model keywords.

Goodness know I love love an extravagant, indulgent, uber-luxe couture show. And the blitz of ready-to-wear that happens during fashion week is like rapture for me too. BUT, I’m fully aware of how utterly inaccessible is the clothing displayed in these shows. For the vast majority of people on earth even diffusion line prices are way out of reach. So I was excited to here that London’s so-called “High Street” has it’s very own fashion week this month. I hope to see more events that feature attainable fashion in a high-style setting. Fashion snobs may scoff, but I think it’s a step in a good direction.

Tube commuters took the front row for a taste of the new season today as London’s first high street fashion week kicked off with a show on the underground.

London fashion week starts in a few days’ time and will remain the preserve of A-listers and journalists. But the “pop-up” style event, which is aimed at promoting the best of Oxford Street, saw models posing in autumn’s newest looks, including sparkly dresses and six-inch heels, as bemused passengers looked on. The “People’s Catwalk” ran on the Central Line from Tottenham Court Road to Marble Arch – the mile and a half length of Oxford Street. The show started at 10am, missing rush hour, and lasted 20 minutes, much longer than regular shows, which often last for under 10 minutes despite hours of waiting. Source

Laura Ramos, of the event’s organiser New West End Company, said: ”It took 20 minutes to complete the Central Line catwalk show, which gave a unique preview of this season’s stunning High Street fashion outfits.

”This is the first time ever that a fashion week has been made so accessible to the public. Fashion week shows are normally reserved for the fashion elite but by creating a show on a shopper-heavy tube, we gave everyone the chance to grab a slice of our ‘fashion week’ action.” Source

Last Spring I attended the Atlanta Fashion and Style Honors – an event designed to recognize the sartorial movers and shakers in the Atlanta metro area. The event left much to be desired, but I appreciated that there’s a core group of people attempting to raise southeast’s style profile.

So when I was invited to the Atlanta International Fashion Week, I thought maybe some of the aforementioned movers and shakers would turn up… not so. There’s another fashion week in Atlanta, called Hautelanta, with events coming up this September. It will be interesting to see who turns up for this one. Ultimately, the cream of each of these groups will have to band together to create something substantial, which will gain some national and, eventually, international attention.

Luckily, her lithe 19-year-old frame is sure to snap back into place – maybe even in time for A/W 10/11 shows next Spring. Just kidding! Fashion Focus will be condensed to a long weekend Oct. 22 to 25 on the theory that a shorter event packed with runway shows, shopping and industry seminars will attract more buyers, tourists and national press than eight days of events.

“There will be fashion going on all day, every day,” said Melissa Gamble, the city’s director of fashion arts and events.

The move is one of several changes to the Fashion Focus template. The city plans to use social media, with related Facebook pages and continual updates on Twitter, and lure national press by offering complimentary weekend trips to select fashion editors and writers.

In another first-time move, Fashion Focus will partly overlap with Stylemax, the Midwest’s largest women’s apparel market, which runs Oct. 24 to 27 at the Merchandise Mart.

“That’s the smartest thing they’ve done,” said designer Pierre Colorado, who creates the Chicago-based sportswear line Blake Standard and will participate in Fashion Focus. “You definitely want to catch buyers when they’re in town.”
