Carey Mulligan: ‘Natural Born Talent’

Actress Carey Mulligan is featured in an editorial for US Vogue in January. I’ve noticed her on the red carpet and she always looks sharp. Mulligan proves she’s great for print as well in this endearingly quirky spread styled by Grace Coddington and shot by David Sims. The issue has Rachel McAdams on the cover – a bigger name in the acting world, but not nearly as stylish Mulligan, whose style quotient shot up when she chopped her hair to it’s current pixie length.

Vogue’s ‘Blackface’ Is No Big Deal

I saw this story starting to break yesterday and gave an audible sigh. Apparently people are upset about a beautiful fashion editorial spread, shot by Steven Klein and featuring model Lara Stone for the October edition of Vogue Paris. Why are they upset? You see, Miss Stone was photo’d wearing dark makeup – or as some or calling it “blackface.” I’d seen that spread in my favorite fashion forum and noticed that Lara Stone was painted brown. And, as a black person, I thought “interesting” – AND THAT’S IT. No offense, no outrage, no big deal. In fact I think the dark makeup up makes Lara look quite elegant in some of these.

Maybe it’s generational – I also don’t call myself and my loved ones nigger…

That fact is that the darkened shots are gorgeous and why should that be offensive?! True, maybe they could have cast a black model, but the spread is named LARA – it’s all about the model and her transformation from shot to shot.

Honestly folks, there are better things to bitch and moan about. Yes, racism still exists and that sucks. But this spread is not its revelation. Instead, the ludicrous reaction is more disheartening. Are we still so uptight and rigid about race? So much so that no matter the intention, certain things must always remain taboo. If so, the annoying tension will never ever go away. Enough already!

Alexa Chung’s Luella Dress Still Smells of Runway…

Wow. You know you’re an “it” girl when you can wear a dress literally fresh from the runway. TV host Alexa Chung pulled off the feat – wearing a dress from the Luella Spring 2010 collection that only showed yesterday to the Vogue private dinner in London. What do you think, did Alexa make the “real-life” version pop?

She looks okay in it, but I would have thought she’d put some Chung-funk on it with a cardigan, boots, belt … something! It is London in the fall, afterall.

Sorry Rihanna fans. The popstar is NOT on the cover of the September 2009 Vogue Italia cover. Not that I don’t think she could land such an honor. But the cover you see on the left is for the couture supplement, not the main cover. That homeless-chic nonsense you see on the right is the actual cover.

Supplement or not, though, it’s a huge fashion coup for the young starlet to be on any September cover. Is it me or is she channelling Grace Jones here???

The ‘Devil’ Really DOES Wear Prada

The September Issue” – a documentary that presents a behind-the-scenes peek at the world of Vogue – premiered at the Modern Museum of Art yesterday in New York City. Some seem to believe that the film’s star, Anna Wintour, was the style highlight of the evening. Not so. I’ve never been a huge fan of her persona, but Wintour did display a bit of sense of humor by sporting a beautiful dress from Prada Resort 2010 to the event. You see – for those of you that have been living under a pop cultural rock – the infamous EIC was the inspiration for the icey but ultra-powerful Miranda Priestly of the best-selling book, then hit movie “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Skin is most certainly in these days. From the resurgance of midriff-baring to ultra-mini skirts (not together, please), the trendy side of fashion wants us to grin and bare it. Accordingly, magazine editorials – the home of fashion hyperbole – are increasingly featuring stark nekkidness. And I don’t mean just Europe…

From Numéro #106 September 2009, model R’El Dade (who was mistaken for Jourdan Dunn) is in the buff with model Melodie Dagault for “Best Friends.” I haven’t any idea what that harness looking this is supposed to be for, but the shit is hot!

See also this solo act for in “ÜBERsinnlich” (that’s “Super Sensual” for we anglopods) – Vogue Germany September 2009. Not as successful, as I see it. Mixing b&w with color photos is not small feat. I do love the back seam stockings, however. Below are the best, here are the rest.

Vogue Editorials: June is for Kitty Cats

Seems June is the month for little kitties and creature for international Vogue editions. Or perhaps a trend brewing? Vogue nippon features a sultry Devon Aoki sporting kitty ears and despite the horibbly over used piece from Dolce & Gabbana, I love the spread. I Aoki is becoming a favority of mine. Vogue Italia also made little critters of model Imogen Morris Clarke and Abbey Lee Kershaw

Weight Nazi Anna Wintour Made Oprah Crash Diet for Vogue Cover

Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour was on 60 minutes yesterday and, according to reports, in an unaired portion of the interview the fashion maven revealed that she told media giant (so to speak) Oprah Winfrey to drop 20 pounds before her 1998 Vogue cover.

“It was a very gentle suggestion,” she said, laughing. “I went to Chicago to visit Oprah, and I suggested that it might be an idea that she lose a little bit of weight.”She added: “I said simply that you might feel more comfortable. She was a trooper!”

“She totally welcomed the idea, and she went on a very stringent diet,” Wintour said. “And it was one of our most successful covers ever.”

Later in the interview Wintour goes on b*tch about the weight of people in Minnesota – calling them “little houses” and asserts that people in the U.S. are more concerned over anorexia then obesity (not true). Perhaps Ms. Wintour should be less concerned about Midwest eating habits and more concerned about why after a mere decade Oprah looks relatively the same and she looks like a creature from a Tim Burton flick.

Michelle O’s Lanvin “Faux Pas” – Much Ado about Nothing!

Conservatives, “news” rags, and others with more time than sense are making a big fuss over First Lady Michelle Obama wearing a pair of Lanvin sneakers to an event last week. Okay, the event was some feed the poor shindig… and okay the kicks retail for $540, but it really does seem like much ado about nothing.

The attempts to make a mountain out of a sartorial molehill are clear indications of Mrs. Obama’s star being on a meteoric rise. When you seem to have everything going for you, haters will find the smallest bit of nonsense to try and tear you down – just ask Beyonce.

The First Lady, whose approval rating is higher than the President’s, solidified her status as a style icon and all-around well-liked public figure on a recent trip to Europe. During that trip, the topic of what Mrs. Obama wore to meet the Queen of England was discussed nearly as much as the outcome of the G20 summit her husband attended.

Wouldn’t it be more detestable if the wife to the leader of the free world disingenuously downgraded her wears for the sake of a photo-op?

Face it haters, Michelle Obama is “well-to-do.” Accordingly, she’s fly. Period. I don’t recall any of this squawking when Cindy McCain touches down for one of her third-world ventures with her Western righteousness AND 3-carat diamonds in tow. C’mon!

The fact is that politicians and their families on all sides of the ideological spectrum are wearing Armani and Chanel on a daily – downturn or no.

Perhaps the real problem here is that the First Lady’s detractors still consider her that dirty little world, which I won’t say here, but it starts with a U and ends with an uppity.
