Pop superstar Rihanna ups her already soaring fashion cred with a cover for W February 2010. The singer is wearing a white dress from the Gucci S/S 2010 collection. This season designer Frida Giannini, who now owns the brand, has offered a line up of crisp silouettes with prints and embellishments that make me call them future classics. Though there is some color, the palette is far more subdued that last springs deep color suits and flowing dresses.

The collection is featured on another February cover – for Vogue China with models Shu Pei and Mirte Maas.

In the dead of Winter, when many of us are trudging through feet of snows, fashion lovers flip through the pages of their favorite glossies to begin planning their Spring wardrobes. But this spring color and flowers aren’t on the wardrobe priority list for me. Instead, crisp solids in neutral colors are my favorites. With To Be G, a handbag collection by Guccio and Alessandro Gucci, great-grandsons of Guccio Gucci, who founded the Gucci brand in 1921, the brothers are set on carving out their own niche, while avoiding any trademark infringement.

“We are not doing this because our name is Gucci, nor do we want to try and replicate what the Gucci brand is doing,” said Guccio Gucci during a tour of his Scandicci, Tuscany, manufacturing plant. “We have our own vision.”

Their passion for leather goods and the accessories business runs deep and in this sense they are Guccis to the core. Guccio Gucci, who designs the To Be G brand, spent 12 years at Gucci, where he coordinated development of product and research of hides, until the company was sold to Investcorp in 1989. After working in the textile industry for almost a decade, he went on to help his father, Giorgio, on the GiorgioG handbags line.

The iconic house of Chanel tops the Cult list of best Resort and Cruise collections. Oddly, this in-between, “for rich folks” season is generally the only one I enjoy from the Chanel brand. Maybe, its the airyness that’s allowed in the pieces, which are meant for taking in warm weather and travel – a lightness not seen in Fall/Winter or even Spring/Summer for Chanel. Gucci creative director Frida Giannini (left) hosted a dinner at the Saatchi Gallery in London with several of the usual suspects in attendance. But there was one special little creature of whom I’d never heard. Her name: W. Brown. Who is this exceedingly stylized (if not stylish) being and why hasn’t Google return a fully fleshed dossier on her?
