Do a net search for “Elle Style Awards” and Google/Bing/Altavista(huh?) will certainly deliver you tens of thousand of Web pages to browse. But even the most relevant of these will tell you very little about this obscure little ceremony – even the Elle Magazine Website itself! What you will get is a slew of red carpet photos showing whichever celebrity is having the best PR blitz at the moment. Really silly, if you ask me. And if even you don’t ask.

I’ll admit, I’m guilty of the proliferation of shallow press, too. My “coverage” of awards shows is generally limited to the red carpet – what they wore, who looked best… But, in my defense, Hollywood is about 99% garbage the Grammys are full of beans. So who the hell cares what happens in those ceremonies. Here’s what I was able to dig up on the the 2010 Elle Awards.

Yep, a simple winner’s list – other nominees not included. Accordingly, the only folks you’ll see the red carpet gallery following are those that won an award this year. Congrats, winners… I guess. The Screen Actors Guild held it’s 16th annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles this weekend. While the fashion wasn’t as spectacular as it was at this years Golden Globes Awards red carpet, celebs still made a decent showing with a few common favorites leading the way. The dress colors ran the gamut, but the prevalent hues were a vibrant blend of reds, whites, and blues.

The 2010 Golden Globe Awards took place in Los Angeles Sunday and, despite rainy weather, the red carpet fashion was spectacular. It was a tough one from which to choose a best-dressed list, as so many celebs brought on the stellar style for the first big event of the 2010 awards season. Couples looked especially good on the red carpet, with stars like Seal, Josh Duhamel, and David Arquette proving that a man in a sharp tux can be one of a woman’s best accessories. And in a show of support for earthquake victims in Haiti, many attendees wore red, blue and yellow ribbons pinned to their garb – even when the colors of the Haitian flag didn’t quite complement their outfit. Paula Abdul: In the shocker of the year, Paula makes a Cult best-dressed list. I admit, she’s getting extra points just for the leaps and bounds she’s made of her previous red carpet disasters, but she truly deserves this one. I love the drama of this dress, which is kept in check by the color. Any other hue and it would have been too much. I could have done without the little boxy clutch she wore, but I love the heavy-handed sparkle on her right hand.

Christine Woods: Although the actress’ look is very trendy (sheer fabric, tulip skirt, velvet clutch, red lips), she still manages an understated elegance.

Mary J. Blige: The singer was right on target from top to bottom: The dress was perfection and expertly accessorized. I even like her blond ‘do! Now if only she could ditch those awful tats…

Adam Lambert: Men rarely make my best-dressed lists because, frankly, they are boring. So when you have a guy that shows an obvious interest in style he almost wins by default… almost. I like Adam here because of his crisp tailoring and attention to detail. He looks like he cares about fashion without being garish or costumed. It’s a fine line for the men. Bobby Trendy, you are WAY over the line.

Mr. & Mrs. Broadus: AKA Snoop Dogg and his amazingly enduring wife. I have never seen ol’ Calvin looking so sharp and I absolutely adore that his beautiful brown wife of many years is right there with him. Black on black love is oh so rare in entertainment (private sigh…). Although Shante’s curves make her a non-traditional beauty by Hollywood standards, she is very stylish here and deserves more attention than she will likely get.

Rihanna: Perhaps the only predictable pick of the bunch. I don’t actually like her dress much, but I appreciate that she generally gives us more than just a pretty girl in a pretty dress. This popstar pushes fashion to the edge.

Honorable mentions (above) include Whitney Houston who looked beautiful on stage in a long white gown and in black with her daughter in the audience; Pete Wentz in another all-black look; Alicia Keys who look great even though her dress was fugly (style comes from within folks!); Demi Lovato; Jennifer Lopez; and Lady Gaga.

The CMA Awards is definitely not the event to look to for cutting edge fashion. You will, however, see some beautiful gowns and few 10-gallon hats. This year’s best dressed: Taylor Swift, Jake Owen, Patricia Heaton, and Michelle Branch.

You might be surprised to see Aronson in the best dressed line up, but I found her suit to be very chic. The fit is comfortable, without being sloppy and those blue glasses (which seem to be a tradmark of hers) are fantastic. Read more about Dr. Aronson the “orphan doctor” at her Website.

Tyra Banks wasn’t among the Glamour honorees, but she’s a Cult honoree here. I love the lines of her shift dress, which is on trend but still simple as befitting a woman of her stature. Tyra looks great at any size (especially sans the weavaliciousness), but I image the fashion set has embraced her again now that she’s back to her old svelte self. Marissa Mayer is officially my new hero. The 34-year-old is a VP at Google and was the uber-tech company’s first ever female engineer ten years ago. And in a rare twist, she’s is incredibly stylish. Geek-chic at it’s best!

Katy Perry looked great in an off-beat Viktor & Rolf gown while hosting the MTV Europe Music Awards (although I wish they’d done something different with her hair). The bodice of the dress, from Spring 2010, is just pretty enough to allow for the quirky skirt, whose voids carved from layer upon layer of chiffon kinda make me itch.

Kudos to Katy for taking a fashion risk with this dress. And by risk I mean wearing something that covers her crotch. I will be sooo glad when this cult-forsaken pantless trend is over with!

TV stars stepped out this evening to collect accolades and strut their stuff during the ever-important arrivals (as usual, far more interesting than the awards themselves). An incredible number of them chose to don the hue of the traditional red carpet – in shades ranging from orangey to berry-color to dead red. Paparazzi darlings Hayden Panettiere and Blake Lively confirm that red has gone from common to uber-trend.

But while red dresses seemed the most common, it was the white gowns that really made the stars shine. (Click for a larger view).

Of course there were other trends on the carpet, including the ubiquitous one-shoulder dress… but what’s that they say about not beating dead horses?

Ladies and Gents, in case you didn’t notice this is a fashion blog. So if you’re looking for Beyonce and the like, keep it moving to a gossip rag like Bossip. Here at the Cult we like to focus on good style, which is why you will rarely if ever she Mrs. Carter on these pages. But before we move onto Cult picks for best-dressed, let’s talk about that dreaded red carpet occurence: duplicate looks. And I’m not talking about Pink and Shakira wearing the same balmain dress. Shakira did it better, BTW (but maybe biased… see below)

Nope I’m talking about the overblown platform trend which for starlets apparently means black patent ___-style pumps. Ugh. They look so affected.

But enough of that. On to the ones that got it right:

We won’t even mention that self-important douchebag seen grabbing his nuts and sipping Hennessy on the red carpet, with his sexpot arm piece – who should probably refrain from so much bragging about styling herself – in tow. Too bad. These too have so much potential.
