If you know Eighty Jane, you know her to be a two-headed monster. On the one hand an advocate of quiet luxury; and on the other a lover of art of the fartsiest variety. Think Celine meets JCDC. But then, I suppose fartsy art IS somewhat of a luxury. After all, last Friday I could have been digging ditches, or looking after 5 screaming brats, or working a double shift at some sweat shop… Instead, I had the leisure to attend a video art festival hosted by non-profit artist org Yeah at Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery.

The videos shown were curated by Yeah founder Eiliyas, who drew from artists around the globe. The selection ranged from art school cliche to visual symphony, but were generally decent. Among the most memorable – if only because it was the most narrative – was the animation piece submitted by Italian artist Lemeh42.

In 1910 Kandinskij published one of his most important works, Klänge (Sounds). The general principle of Klänge was the liberation of the inner sound. One century later, Lemeh42 realizes a personal homage to this russian painter. Inner Klänge (Inner sounds) is an animated journey to find the Inner sound.

Yet while the video festival was the main event, my ever-present fashion goggles drew me to a number of pieces currently on show at the gallery. Atlanta’s Paper Twins (artists Nica and Edgar A. English) has a deceivingly simple and folksy look from about 10 paces, but get closer and the cut out details draw you into the pieces, whose 2D style is transformed 3D effect by the artist’s clever use of scale. Then there’s that fantastic clothes line. There are at least two items on it that would love to have in my wardrobe.

In another corner of the gallery was a piece by an artist from Tel-Aviv known as Know Hope. Though the work shown at the Eyedrum was without the candle-lit magic that helped gain the artist his notoriety, the pen on paper drawings still captured my imagination with their loaded words, expressive limbs… and their skinny jeans. Definitely, this snaps (taken from my phone) fare from do the work justice.

Then, in a back room, which had lights dimmed for a video screening there were 2 of the 7 deadly sins. The pieces are a part of a multi-media series by artist collective The Status Faction. And just as you might expect from a fashion-lover my two favorites were Vanity and Envy. You can see better snaps of these two and the rest of the series at the group’s website. However, I rather like how they look in the dark. Plus, I was really digging my E.J. ensemble that evening and you get a little peek of it here… Vanity is hard to resist while in perfectly schlubby Thakoon for Target.

To every Cult there is a dark side, and the Fashion Cult is no different. I remember stories in the 90s of kids getting shot on the street for their high-priced sneakers. Are a pair of Jordans really worth your soul? Crazy. Now it’s denim that inspiring folks to a life of crime. The boom of premium denim has sparked an epidemic in the Atlanta area – of thieves ganking blue jeans like they were diamonds and pearls. Sure, we drool over Loewe handbags and Proenza Schouler boots, but followers the bottom line is that style comes from within. So if you think you have to steal or buy stolen merchandise to be fashionable, think again. You can’t shine with that sort of blood on your hands.

From WWD:

Thieves drove a stolen van into a Nordstrom store at Perimeter Mall near Atlanta early Monday and fled with armloads of premium denim valued at $13,000, police said.

It was the second time in recent months that the mall — owned by General Growth Properties Inc. and located in Dunwoody, Ga., about 20 miles north of Atlanta — has been victimized by denim thieves. In October, robbers took an estimated $17,000 in premium denim from Bloomingdale’s.

The Dodge Caravan crashed into one of the store’s exterior entrances about 6 a.m., and three men grabbed 87 pairs of jeans. They left the van behind and escaped on foot.

It was unclear whether the latest robbery could be linked to the Blue Jean Bandits, a gang that has stolen more than $1.5 million in premium denim from some 70 Atlanta-area stores since 2007, said Detective Robert Bentivegna of the Dunwoody Police Department. The heists began as after-hours smash-and-grabs and escalated to brazen armed robberies during the day.

The last weekend of Summer (according to tradition) was a busy one in Atlanta. Besides a plethora of private BBQs and get togethers, the metro area was buzzing with local events, like the Decatur Book Festival; as well as national attractions like Dragon*Con.

Friday evening I braved the mind-numbing traffic for cocktails and good music at the Glenn Hotel rooftop. I was pleasantly surprised at how diverse the spot was – a rarity in Atlanta. I don’t just mean racially diverse, though it was that as well. The crowd was a genuine mix of varied generations, backgrounds, and styles.

Whether in platform stilettos or John Deer hat, everyone fit just fine in the late summer air. The well-attended but not crowded venue left plenty of room for patrons to enjoy the dance floor or just enjoy the great view of downtown Atlanta.

The sartorial standout you see below is Paul. I wasn’t planning on style spotting that evening, but Paul’s smart silk bowtie and Big Bird pin were irresistible!

Another weekend gone by in the fine city of Atlanta, GA. It was a relatively low key one for this style spotter, but I did step out briefly on Friday to Glenwood Park’s wine bar and eatery Vino Libro. I’d been to the spot before, but never on a Friday night. It was packed! A bit too much so, really. The cramps quarters was understandable and forgiven once a took in the atmosphere – and my atmosphere I mean two glasses of pinot noir and the slammin’ sound of Gritz and Jelly Butter.

Although the wine was good, and the music even better, the highlight of my night was meeting Matthew Weaver – a custom clothier, personal stylist, and all around cutie. Although the crowd was generally decently dressed, Matthew stood out as being one of very few with a singular sense of style.
